Given the specifics of the work and the operations involved, the company runs its own fleet of vehicles and machines designed for a wide range of works in the road construction and oil production fields: dumper trucks, bulldozers, excavators, loader trucks, fuel tanker trucks, automated cranes, industrial tow-trucks, etc. The fleet is comprised of over 300 vehicles and machines in total.
"OAO SMP-NEFTEGAZ" (OJSC) is one of the largest businesses in Tatarstan involved in oil production and road construction.
In early 2011, "OAO SMP-NEFTEGAZ" (OJSC) faced a strong need to re-equip its whole fleet with transport monitoring systems.
"Our previous system consisted of a GPS module and a flow-type fuel consumption sensor that used to freeze in winter. This prevented our drivers from starting their vehicles and machines on time and getting their work done," recalls Marat Akhmetshin, the head of company property at "OAO SMP-NEFTEGAZ" (OJSC).
SAVING 31,250 DOLLARS PER MONTH
SELECTING THE EQUIPMENTThe decision to replace the previous transport monitoring systems was driven by the company's increased requirement for equipment safety and reliability, ensuring that the equipment allowed receiving information on performance of their machines and fuel consumption online.
In February 2011, "OAO SMP-NEFTEGAZ" (OJSC) announced a tendering competition for equipment supply, installation and servicing.
A number of companies pitched their bids, offering a range of various technological solutions that all provided the following services:
• Fuel consumption control
• Fuel tanker refuels and control of fuel dispensing
• Developing and tracking transport vehicle routes
• Specialised equipment and mounted mechanism operations control
Specialised equipment control was one of the priority factors that the company paid special attention to when selecting the new transport monitoring system. Such auxiliary equipment as the dumper truck vessel, the excavator bucket or even the mobile steaming unit has a significant impact on the fuel consumption associated with the corresponding machines and vehicles.
TRIAL INSTALLATIONAs a result, the company decided to go for a trial installation of Omnicomm's transport monitoring system on a MAZ dumper truck, a small T170 bulldozer and a large T25.01 bulldozer. Over the two-month trial period the technological solutions by Omnicomm demonstrated their reliability and high accuracy. Not even once did the equipment fail or break down; the data retrieved from the equipment was accurate; and the system's ability to produce a range of reports that were user-friendly and helped objectively evaluate the company's transport situation only worked to reassure the senior management of "OAO SMP-NEFTEGAZ" (OJSC) that re-equipping their fleet was a must.
The decision was made to install Omnicomm's transport monitoring systems on all vehicles and machines of the fleet. As of today, over 300 units have been re-equipped successfully. Once the installation was complete, Omnicomm was to provide constant transport monitoring and automation to all the reporting processes. A separate service was formed for detecting drains, analysing mileage and refuelings. And that is how Omnicomm's transport monitoring system became the defining and motivating factor in optimizing the company's internal processes.
The driver gets their trip ticket from the terminal by using a special key-fob that is linked to one specific vehicle or machine equipped with Omnicomm's monitoring system. Once the trip ticket is activated and printed out, the monitoring system starts collecting data on the vehicle online, including its location, the fuel level in the tank, the engine RMP speed, vessel operations and other parameters. When drivers returns to the garage, they close their trip tickets by using unique barcodes.
The company's fuel tanker trucks were equipped with Omnicomm's proprietary I-Button technology that helps identify the drivers. The idea behind is as follows: a vehicle or machine drives up to the fuel tanker truck, the driver scans their ID, and then refueling begins, while an electronic report on fuel dispensing is being put together. This solution helps control the relocation of the fuel from its refueling point to its use by the company's machines and vehicles.
IMPLEMENTATION RESULTS• Fuel savings of 30% given unchanged scope and volume of work: an equivalent of cost cuts of 31,250 dollars per month
